Part B late-enrollment penalty

The penalty is 10% of the standard premium for each full 12 months you could have had Part B but did not, and it lasts as long as you have Part B.

Part D late-enrollment penalty

1% of the national base beneficiary premium ($38.99 in 2026) for every month without Part D or other creditable drug coverage, rounded to the nearest 10 cents, for as long as you have Part D.

Medigap Plan G vs Plan N

Both plans leave you the $283 Part B deductible in 2026. Plan N trades a lower premium for up to $20 office-visit and $50 ER copays and no coverage of Part B excess charges. Enter the two premiums you were quoted.

How is the Medicare Part B late-enrollment penalty calculated?

10% of the standard Part B premium for every full 12-month period you could have had Part B but did not sign up, added to your premium for as long as you have Part B. In 2026 the standard premium is $202.90.

How is the Part D late-enrollment penalty calculated?

1% of the national base beneficiary premium ($38.99 in 2026) multiplied by the number of full months you went without Part D or other creditable drug coverage, rounded to the nearest 10 cents and added to your premium permanently.

What is IRMAA?

The Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount: an extra Part B and Part D premium for people whose modified adjusted gross income from two years earlier is above $109,000 (single) or $218,000 (married filing jointly) for 2026.

When is my Initial Enrollment Period?

The seven months around your 65th birthday: the three months before your birthday month, your birthday month, and the three months after.
